Rubbish Crisis – Church and Community Working Together

Croydon North Deanery churches, with Croydon Citizens  and Thornton Heath Community Action Team (THCAT) held a meeting at Holy Saviour for residents,  the council and Veolia (waste management contractor) about the crisis of the rubbish and litter on our streets. The meeting focused especially on fly-tipping.

A packed room of residents,  councillors, council staff, Veolia managers and operatives (see pictures below) discussed the fly-tipping hotline and internet reporting,  bulky waste collection, responsibilities of landlords and tenants and the street champion scheme.

Meeting attendees included: the Croydon Council leader, Tony Newman;  deputy leader, Councillor Stuart Collins; and regional manager of Veolia, Sean Trotter.

Many thanks to all who came and also to the organisers: our vicar, Revd Catherine Tucker; Linda Watson, chair of THCAT; James Asfa, community organiser of Croydon Citizens; Jamie Audsley, councillor for Bensham Manor; as well as Father Len Marsh, Croydon North Area Dean; and Mother Joyce Forbes of St Stephens Church Norbury.

More action will follow. Watch this space.
